THEORETICAL APPROACHES TO THE IDENTITY OF THE CHORAL CONDUCTOR
Abstract
Research objective. This article offers a theoretical examination of the phenomenon of conductor’s identity within the context of the transformation of academic musical culture in the 21st century. The study focuses on revealing the essence of the choral conductor’s creative personality as a complex interdisciplinary construct formed at the intersection of aesthetic, pedagogical, performative, and sociocultural dimensions. Research methodology. The analysis applies comparative, cultural, phenomenological, and interdisciplinary approaches, allowing for a synthesis of relevant scholarly concepts and theoretical frameworks regarding the identity of the choral conductor. The source base includes publications indexed in leading international databases (Scopus, Web of Science, SSRN, CEEOL) over the past ten years, with particular attention to Ukrainian and European musicological discourse. Scientific novelty. This study is the first to provide a structured overview and typology of contemporary theoretical models of conductor’s identity, encompassing concepts of creative leadership, cultural diplomacy, intercultural communication, pedagogical performance, and media presentation. It argues that the modern choral conductor’s identity is not limited to a professional role but reflects an active cultural position that represents national musical tradition within the global artistic landscape. Furthermore, it is substantiated that the conductor’s interaction with the audience is being redefined – from the traditional authoritative interpreter to a collaborative, creative partner in virtual and digital spaces. Conclusions. In the current conditions of musical and cultural transformation, the choral conductor’s identity emerges as a complex and dynamic phenomenon requiring new theoretical interpretation. It integrates multifaceted functions: performative (representational), pedagogical (educational), aesthetic (creative), mediacommunicative (digital), sociocultural (value-oriented), and culturaldiplomatic (international). Formed through a close interplay between national traditions and global challenges, contemporary conductor identity demands flexibility, creativity, and the ability to integrate innovative strategies into professional practice.
